This book deals with Doctor Syn's smuggling adventures when his Nightriders were at the height of their success, and although complete in itself, follows chronologically the events recorded in Doctor Syn Returns. “Death to the Scarecrow” is once again the slogan of the authorities, who are ranged against him. The Navy, the Army, Customs Officers, Magistrates, Bow Street Runners, Press-gang and “Informers" are all enlisted to put down the scandalous contraband running on Romney Marsh, and a large reward is offered for the capture, alive or dead, of the mysterious leader.
